KATONAH, NY FIRE DEPARTMENT
2008 Chevrolet Suburban  / 2212

( Top )

The Katonah New York Volunteer Fire Department recently took delivery of their newest Chief’s vehicle, a 2008 Chevrolet Suburban.  The KVFD invested many months in the planning of 22-1-2 to achieve their goal of a vehicle capable of fulfilling multiple first responder and incident command responsibilities.

The Whelen lighting system is comprised of a 55 inch Freedom FX LED lightbar, 700 series Super LEDs in the grille, 400 series LEDs on each outer corner and two TIR3 Super LEDs mounted on the outside of the rear cargo door.  Four additional TIR3s were mounted inside the cargo compartment to provide supplemental lighting when the door was raised while a TIR3 Traffic Advisor was incorporated into the rear headliner to provide traffic control.  A CenCom system with a 100 watt siren speaker and headlight flasher, complete the warning system.

Two dual halogen floodlights mounted under the rear of the truck work in conjunction with the OEM reverse lights and afford extra nighttime ground lighting.  Two Whelen LED compartment lights were also added to the inside face of the cargo door to provide command cabinet area lighting.

The rear command cabinet is custom built to the FDs specs and contains storage for EMS, incident command and firefighting supplies as well as a flip up IC board with a clear overaly.  This clear sheet allows for maps, pre plans or scene management materials to be placed under a marking surface, for ongoing informational updates.  The Westchester County trunk radio, dual power outlets, handlight and Knox SentraLok were all installed at this rear position to simplify command operations and consolidate all necessary components in one location.  The front of the cabinet was used as a centralized mounting location for all vehicle & communications electronics.  Identical cabinets were recently installed in Chief’s cars 1-1 and 1-3 to accomplish standardization among the three cars to provide improved scene management capabilities.

A 24 inch Havis-Shields console incorporates the CenCom control head, County and FD radios, scanner, power outlets, cup holder and storage compartment.  A custom reflective graphics package duplicates the other KVFD Chief’s vehicles.

SPECIALTY WARNING SYSTEMS EXTENDS IT’S THANKS TO CHIEF SMITH AND THE KVFD FOR THEIR CONFIDENCE IN US TO PROVIDE THEIR NEWEST COMMAND VEHICLE.

Redding (CT) Police Department
2007 FORD EXPEDITION / SPECIAL SERVICES VEHICLE

 ( Top )

The Redding CT Police Department has just taken delivery of their new 2007 Expedition, assigned to the shift sergeants(s), configured to function as the shift supervisors vehicle and overall police department (on scene) Incident Command post.  Lighting is a Whelen system including a Liberty LED lightbar, 400 series LEDs in the front, two LIN6 LEDs on the outside of the cargo door, eight head Dominator in the rear window and two head Dominators in the rear side windows.  A headlight flasher, Whelen CenCom controller and CPI light/siren combination (mounted on the pushbumper) complete the system.

As with the rest of the Redding PD fleet, a Go Rhino pushbumper was installed to provide added front end protection.  It also provides a convenient and more efficient platform for the front end and side warning LEDs and siren speaker.  Supplemental self contained halogen lights are to be added in the near future, to provide additional takedown lighting to the front of the vehicle.  Pushbumpers are installed on every RPD vehicle and have more than proven their benefit in several deer strikes that have occurred over the years.

The cargo compartment command center was installed to store traffic control, investigative, EMS and scene management supplies.  A slide out command board allows for scene planning, personnel tracking and planning while multiple radios provide for regional multi agency communications.  Two Whelen LED compartment lights mounted in the cargo door provide general lighting to the work area while two dual halogen floodlights mounted under the rear bumper, provide for ground lighting and added visibility while the vehicle is in reverse.

A 30” Havis-Shields console contains FD & PD radios, CenCom control head, dual cup holders, a storage box, side mount armrest, supplemental switching and two 12 volt power outlets.  It also provides a stable mounting surface for a Panasonic Toughbooks computer and MagLite.  An AOI airbag option switch was installed (similar to every RPD vehicle) to disable the passenger side airbag, due to the addition of the Panasonic computer, placing it in the deployment path of the passenger bag.

SPECIALTY WARNING SYSTEMS EXTENDS IT’S THANKS TO THE REDDING POLICE DEPARTMENT FOR THEIR ONGOING SUPPORT AND CONFIDENCE IN US.

South Salem NY Fire Department
2008 Ford F350 Super Duty  -  Quad Cab Pickup Truck

 ( Top )

South Salem recently accepted their new “Utility 79”, a 2008 F350 Super Duty Quad Cab.    Several specific goals had to be met in the course of the conversion, to meet the fire department’s requirements.

The lighting package includes a 55 inch Whelen Freedom LED lightbar, four TIR6 Super LEDs on the outside of the front grille, a TIR6 LED Traffic Advisor cargo bed front screen and a TIR6 mounted on each of the four side corners.  A headlight flasher and taillight / backup light flasher along with a Whelen electronic siren complete the warning system.

A unique feature of the vehicle is the addition of a wireless remote controlled Go Light spotlight, installed on the top of the Freedom bar.  It allows for more than 360 degrees of rotation and 135 degrees of pan and tilt.  Installed on top of the lightbar, this allows the operator to utilize the spotlight for full coverage around the perimeter of the vehicle at almost unlimited angles.  It utilizes a wireless dash mounted controller as well as a wireless handheld control.  This remote controller allows the operator to adjust the position of the light from a position away from the truck.

As the quad cab was designed to carry additional passengers, it was important to maintain this carry capacity.  Four portable radios and two Streamlight handlights were to be mounted inside the passenger compartment, thus creating an additional challenge.  Custom mounts were fabricated in the front and under the rear of the Havis console for the Streamlights, while the four portable chargers and two external radio speakers were all mounted around the upper perimeter of the console.  The 30 inch console contains two radio control heads, siren amplifier, Traffic Advisor controller, two 12V power outlets, system switch panels, dual cup holder and six inch storage compartment.

The graphics package is done in both reflective and gold leaf, featuring decorative (hand drawn!) “flourishes” on either side of the unit number, that duplicates the artwork on all their engines.

A Kussmaul Super system with Auto Eject, maintains battery condition with an LED graph mounted forward of the console providing easy indication of battery level.  Under the back of the truck, two dual 55 watt halogen floodlights were added, with one on each side functioning as supplemental reverse lights, and the other pair controlled by a console mounted switch, for additional rear floodlighting while parked at a scene.  Four additional floodlights were mounted under the truck, one at each corner, to provide side perimeter lighting at night.

SPECIALTY WARNING SYSTEMS EXTENDS THEIR APPRECIATION TO THE SOUTH SALEM VFD FOR THE OPPORTUNITY TO HELP IN PLACING THEIR NEW UTILITY TRUCK IN SERVICE.

The OEM center console was removed and replaced by a Havis-Shields vehicle specific console which contains the A6 controller, FD Motorola radio, dual cup holders, 12V power outlets and swing up armrest.

SPECIALTY WARNING SYSTEMS EXTENDS IT’S THANKS TO THE CHIEF AND FIRE MARSHALL’S OFFICE(s) FOR THEIR FAITH IN US TO PROVIDE THIS, OUR THIRD VEHICLE FOR THE GREENWICH FIRE DEPARTMENT.

Specialty Warning Systems recently completed this privately owned, 2008 Dodge Charger SRT8.  The LED warning system incorporates a Whelen Liberty lightbar, eight head (front mounted) Dominator Super LED lightbar, lower rear window Inner Edge Traffic Advisor and two rear window dual Dominators, all controlled by a Whelen CenCom Gold system controller.

A Go Rhino pushbumper was installed and serves as a mounting platform for the front Dominator and two HID driving lights.  All system electronics are in a concealed mounting.  The trunk contains a Havis-Shields sliding trunk tray for first responder equipment, two LED compartment lights and two TIR3 LEDs for additional warning to the rear, when the trunk lid is raised.  The sliding tray allows for bulky equipment to be consolidated in one common location, remaining out of the way until required.

A “nightstripe” reflective graphics package was installed…..virtually undetectable during the day, it affords a significant amount of nighttime reflectivity when illuminated.

OUR THANKS TO THE OWNER OF THIS UNIQUE VEHICLE FOR SELECTING SPECIALTY WARNING SYSTEMS.
